Import/export of character information

Question:

In one of my databases, I have a character experiment type to which I added quite a lot of information in custom fields. The same character experiment type experiment exists in another database. Is there a way to transfer the character information without having to type it all again?

Answer:

Character information fields are very convenient to store information pertaining to individual characters, such as alternative names (e.g. full names of antibiotics in an antibiotics resistance test). In 16S metagenomics, this is used to store information about phylogenetic levels. The SNP calling plugin makes use of character info field to store call mappings.

Character information can be exported from the Character type window and imported again in another character experiment type in the same or a different database. To export the data, proceed as follows:

  1. Open the Character type window.
  2. In case you only want to export a subset of the available fields, click on the column properties button in the header of the Characters panel and select Set active fields. Check the fields you want to export and press OK.
  3. Export the data via the column properties button and Save content to file.

The resulting export.csv file is stored in the database folder and can be imported again in another database:

  1. Open the Character type window of the character experiment in which you want to import the information and select Characters > Import character information.
  2. Browse for the file and press Next.
  3. Highlight the fields to import and press Finish to import the data.
